Description
British army military barracks,Summerhill, Nenagh, Co. Tipperary. 19th-century upgright boundary stone inscribed on two faces built into south wall of a house on the north side of the entrance to the barracks. Stone marked the northwest corner of the property belonging to the military barracks. W ↑ D which stands for War Department. The broad arrow pointing upwards carved between the W D of which the pheon is a variant, is a stylised representation of a metal arrowhead, comprising a tang and two barbs meeting at a point. It is a symbol used traditionally in heraldry, most notably in England, and later by the British government to mark government property. Erected after 1855 when the Board of Ordnance was disbanded and all military land functions were transferred to the newly created War Department. The stone has been patined which makes the inscription on the roadside face difficult to read. A broad arrow on top with .....Feet Front
