Plomizo ceramic vessel featuring the figure of a “Tláloc fish” (water deity widely recognized in Mesoamerica) with some anthropomorphic traits and characteristic Tláloc eye ornaments. The piece displays raised pectoral fins and a caudal fin that forms the spout. It also includes human features such as the nose and mouth, showing teeth. The donor reported its provenance as the department of Jalapa, southeastern Guatemala. Although this type of ceramic was produced on the Soconusco Coast, between Mexico and Guatemala, it was highly valued throughout Mesoamerica. This piece has been identified as a vessel for administering enemas, explaining the slanted spout (Dorie Reents-Budet, pers. comm., 2018).
