Medieval Town

Allée couverte du Bois-Couturier, a megalithic tomb located in Guiry-en-Vexin, France was discovered in 1915 by an agricultural worker. This ancient tomb is buried in the hillside overlooking the Aubette valley at an altitude of 132 meters. Facing south/ southeast, the burial chamber measures 7 meters long and 2 meters wide. The antechamber is short and wide measuring 1 meter by 1.85 meters. The walls, constructed of horizontal layers of limestone plates, measure 1.30 meters high. The arrangement of the limestone slabs of the roof have been disturbed, and their current position is a result of restoration.

This model was created from FARO Focus S70 scan data and processed in Reality Capture software.

In general, Asian elephants are smaller than African elephants and have the highest body point on the head. The tip of their trunk has one finger-like process. Their back is convex or level. Indian elephants reach a shoulder height of between 6.6 and 11.5 ft, weigh between 2,000 to 5,000 kg, and have 19 pairs of ribs. Their skin colour is lighter than that of E. m. maximus with smaller patches of depigmentation, but darker than that of E. m. sumatranus. Females are usually smaller than males and have short or no tusks.

Habitat:
The habitats of Indian elephant are varied, but all are within the tropical region. They can live in grasslands and a variety of forests, including scrub forests, tropical evergreen forests, and deciduous forests. Elephants are herbivores and spend up to 19 hours a day grazing on a variety of plants.

Elephant

The shape of the foot of the monstrance is similar to an oval with concave-convex  profiling. The ornately decorated slope of the foot is divided into four fields with symbols of the Eucharist (grain ears and bunches of grapes), two heads of angels and the coat of arms of the abbey. Two Austrian (re-marking) hallmarks are present on the flange of the foot. The stem is shaped like a candelabrum, made of smooth rings and decorated with foliate motifs. The pear-shaped nodus is decorated with angel heads. It features a sunburst aureole consisting of bundles of conjoined rays of different lengths. Reservaculum has a trefoil shape and is enclosed in a frame with floral and cornice board decorations. The frame is studded with blue-turquoise stones (artificial gemstones made of coloured glass).

Monstrance

I made this model after seeing Dani Wootton's excellent '5 Fascinating Finds' video on the Time Team channel https://youtu.be/m-Z1uM9DMRI

This model illustrates Dani's description of how Roman pottery was mass produced using a mould with decorations pressed into the mould surface.  Click on the annotations on the model for more information.

In researching this model I visited the British Museum in London to get a closer look at the 'punches' that were used to create the decorative indentations in the mould surface.  I felt sure the surface of the punch must be curved to follow the contour of the mould but wasn't sure if the curve was more pronounced so that the punch would be rocked back and forwards when being pressed into the clay.  The example I saw at the British Museum (Ancient Rome room - display case 26 - see below) showed a punch with a figure on it and a slight convex curve which I think would have matched the surface of the mould.

It is listed by IUCN as "critically endangered: possibly extinct" with no confirmed sightings in over 20 years. Baiji were declared functionally extinct in 2006. Base model created with AI tools, then sculpted/ edited in Blender for scientific accuracy.

Miniature zoomorphic effigy vessel representing a bird, with convex walls and base, covered with a brown slip. The head, wings, legs, and tail are modeled and applied to the vessel body. Two speices of Lobate Comb Jellies and 1 Not. Lobata is an order of transparent marine invertebrates belonging to the phylum of Ctenophora in the class Tentaculata, and are commonly referred to as comb jellies or sea gooseberries.
The other (Brown Comb Jelly) is from family Beroidae  more commonly referred to as the beroids. It is the only known family within the monotypic order Beroida and the class Nuda. They are distinguished from other comb jellies by the complete absence of tentacles, in both juvenile and adult stages.

Bowl with negative painting

Polychrome bowl (red and black on yellow slip) with convex walls and base. Above and below the rim are two horizontal bands, one black and the other red, followed by a horizontal band of pseudo-glyphs painted in red. The spoon is characterised by a round, oval-shaped, convexly curved bowl accompanied by a two-part handle. The end piece is distinguished by its smooth surface and rectangular cross-section, while the central section exhibits a rectangular form with a twist. Furthermore, each side is characterised by the presence of two rows of lines. The bowl, middle section and end piece are separated from each other by a profiled node.

This object was digitized through the ‘Kulturerbe digital’ program of the Federal Ministry for Arts, Culture, Public Service and Sport.

Element V1419: 4D Polychoron | PAPP

Miniature Teotihuacan-style incense. The lid depicts a figure wearing a tall headdress with zoomorphic design, with open eyes and mouth, followed by a band with four floral motifs. The face is painted red and displays open eyes, an aquiline nose with a nose ornament, earflares, and a necklace with circular beads. Incense Burner

Stone artifact with a convex surface, worked in a crescent shape. The exterior surface bears features of a zoomorphic face, including round eyes with pronounced supraorbital ridges, a flat nose, and a closed mouth curving downward. Each end of the piece has two perforations, one upper and one lower, intended for attachment. This artifact may represent a knee guard or thigh protector associated with the Mesoamerican ballgame.

Rectangular tripod grinding stone (metate) with rounded corners. One surface is convex, the other concave. Grinding stone/ Metate with Reptile Relief

Cazuela proveniente del Cuarto Real de Santo Domingo (GR-CRSD-06-5066-1). Esta cocida en un ambiente oxidante. Como decoración presenta restos de un vidriado melado. A nivel formal la boca es circular y tiene un diámetro de 10cm. Presenta un labio redondeado en un borde entrante que conecta directaamente con el cuerpo. Este presenta una forma redondeada donde se observan distintas acanaladuras en la parte superior. La base es convexa y tiene un diámetro de 12cm. Presenta un asa completa y el arranque de otras tres. De la que se conserva podemos ver que arranca en la base y se asdosa al cuerpo bajo el borde. Ha sido pegada a la pieza a excepción de la parte superior donde permite el agarre.
