Inscribed on the tortoise's shell: 'OPVS IOANNIS GIBSON ROMAE' Gibson recorded how the wealthy MP Joseph Neeld (1789 1856) had visited his studio in Rome several times before asking him to carve a 'Venus, nude, but with some drapery modestly arranged without sacrificing too much of the form'.

Inspired by Classical prototypes, Gibson showed the Roman goddess of love as an idealised female nude with elegant curves and soft modelling, holding the golden apple, awarded by Paris for her beauty. Although apples are often associated with carnal love, Gibson called his statue Venus Verticordia, or the turner of men's hearts and later recalled how he had

Pieta A 3D Tribute to Michelangelo's Masterpiece

A bodhisattva is a "promised enlightenment," but delays its entrance into nirvana to help all living beings to attain illumination. The crystalline pupils are made of rock crystal. Such care is justified by the fact that the consecration of a Buddhist statue consisted in opening his eyes ritually. This ceremony gave him a soul and made it an object of worship. The tiara in her hair, the necklace on her chest, the drapery retained at the waist by an elaborate belt are the image of the historical Buddha, Shakyamuni. The bodhisattva originally stood in a temple next to a larger Buddha. The present presentation at the museum aims to restore the oblique angle of vision under which it appeared to the visitor in the Chinese sanctuary.

Marble Venus de Milo Statue

Gothic Cloaked Figure - Building Wall Statue

The Hygieia Fountain is a lead-cast statue fountain created by Johann Martin Fischer and erected in 1787 at public expense. It stands in the forecourt of the Josephinum (9th District, Währinger Straße 25).

The depiction of the goddess Hygieia—symbol of health—directly reflects the function of the building behind it, constructed between 1783 and 1785 as a training institution for physicians and military doctors and today housing, among other facilities, the Institute and Museum for the History of Medicine.

The central figure is a calm, classically inspired female statue dressed in antique-style drapery, standing on a high pedestal. In her left hand she holds a bowl from which a snake drinks, while another snake coils around her right arm—traditional attributes of Hygieia. The pedestal and octagonal basin are made of stone, while the basin railing and water spouts, designed as Medusa heads, are crafted from metal.

The Statue of St Thomas by Pierre Le Gros the Younger (c. 1703–1711) resides in the Archbasilica of St. John Lateran in Rome. It was part of Pope Clement XI's project to fill Borromini's niches with twelve colossal apostle statues, sponsored by King Peter II of Portugal. Le Gros was the only sculptor who successfully refused to work from the prescribed drawings by Carlo Maratta. His initial, highly emotional Baroque terracotta model was rejected. The final marble statue is more restrained: St Thomas holds a carpenter's square, with ordered drapery. His distinctive finger protrudes from the niche, pointing toward the altar, symbolizing moving beyond doubt on the path of faith.

The Statue of St James the Less by Angelo de' Rossi (c. 1705–1711) is housed in the Archbasilica of St. John Lateran in Rome. This approximately 4.5-meter marble statue was part of Pope Clement XI's commission for twelve colossal apostle figures to fill the niches designed by Francesco Borromini. From a statuette, the head of a clothed figure with possibly short hair (goddess or young man?) as well as a small part of the right side of the body are preserved. Two broad folds of drapery are visible at the neck. The facial features are very finely executed. The right arm was originally extended horizontally. There is a small, round hole on the top of the head.

Female donor figure to the right of thePieta on front or altar reredos dating from the second half of the 15th century, standing up against the internal face of the eastern wall of the chancel of Strade Dominican Friary (MA070-067001-), Co. Mayo. Described by archaeologist John Hunt as; ‘The lady has a close-fitting tunic, with tight sleeves fastened under the forearms with many buttons. The dress has a high neck and a cross at the throat. She wears a brat or great mantle, thrown back from the upper part of the body, but covering her waist and knees. This is treated in a pocked technique to suggest a heavy rough texture. The treatment of the figure drapery is looser than Ossory types or than the Meath school—though the style has closer affinities with Ossory than with the Dublin Pale.
