Emperor Scorpions (*Pandinus imperator*) are among the largest and most iconic scorpions in the world. Native to West Africa, they can grow up to 8 inches long and are known for their glossy black exoskeleton and powerful pincers. Despite their intimidating appearance, emperor scorpions are relatively docile and use their pincers more than their mild venom to subdue prey.

They thrive in humid environments like tropical forests and burrows, feeding on insects, spiders, and small vertebrates. Their nocturnal habits and sensitivity to vibrations make them stealthy hunters. In captivity, they’re popular among enthusiasts due to their manageable temperament and striking look.

While their sting is comparable to a bee’s, emperor scorpions play a vital ecological role and are studied for their fluorescent properties under UV light. Their blend of size, strength, and gentleness makes them a fascinating ambassador of the Scorpiones order.

The Backrooms is an internet urban legend and creepypasta about a fictional, seemingly endless, extradimensional maze of empty, abandoned rooms. It is characterized by its monotonous yellow walls, buzzing fluorescent lights, and the damp smell of old carpet.

## Scanning
Scan was done in IR mode with 3mm resolution and large mode, Rigil was used standalone. For tracking only feature tracking was used (texture would have helped but the light was dim and flickery (fluorescent tubes be thanked) so no real help...). This created a bit of a challenge when scanning the tar large flat parts of the couch. The persian carpet would have provided enough texture but it couldn't be used for tracking due flickering of the light tubes. Scan itself took roughly 5min.

## Post-Processing
Just point cloud generation and meshing at recommended settings (meshing as semi-watertight) on my workstation (simply faster than on device). After meshing I did a quick texture optimization and alignment within Exscan Rigil.

Lighting

A take on a prowling force on the top of a building, peering through the suffocating smog of the city below. Fluorescent colors burn under the blue light and the city glows up from below. Who is the on the look out for? Who knows, in this city not many people will care. 

It's been a fun piece to work on and get to push myself as hard and as far as I can go at this point in time. Working with Fluorescent paints, working in some lights under the clouds and working with 'Invisible uv reactive nailpolish' has been a blast. Though admittedly, I did not have UV-Nailpolish on my bingocard for 'Odd materials I'll use this year'  but here we are.

Fluorescent Light

A 1960s style fluorescent hanging light modelled as a supporting prop for a personal Route 66 desert gas station environment project. Modelled in Autodesk Maya using high to low poly baking, UV mapped in Maya, and textured in Adobe Substance Painter using a PBR workflow.

Modelled from a non-orthographic reference image — a deliberate step forward from relying purely on blueprint references, developing confidence in reading form and proportion from real world photographic reference. Part of the same production pipeline as the hero gas pump asset — Maya modelling, high to low poly bake, Substance Painter texturing.

The light will feature in the final Route 66 gas station environment scene alongside the gas pump, station building, and surrounding desert props. Currently in active development.
