A mattress would be placed in the center of a large star painted on the desert floor—if one were to parachute out of an airplane (airplane provided) and land on the mattress, they would be the lucky winner of a night with the lady of his choice, on the house!

Unsurprisingly, things went horribly wrong. Long story short, scantily-clad women plus distracted, inexperienced pilot plus heavy cross winds equal the plane plummeting straight into the ground. This single column steam hammer was built in 1907,  for  the opening of the Clyde Port Authority (Clyde Navigation Trust) repair workshops in Renfrew.

When the works closed the hammer was transferred, with other machinery, to the Scottish Maritime Museum.

It is an example of a steam hammer made to Rigby’s patent by the leading maker of such machines, RG Ross & Sons at their Greenhead Engine Works in Glasgow. It was used to forge replacement parts for the Clyde Navigation Trusts’s fleet of dredgers and hopper barges.

Steam hammes consists of a cast iron base plate and the hammer body which carries a steam piston and hammer head.

It was operated by pulling on the long metal lever on the right hand side. This released steam into the piston making the hammer head move down with great force.
A trained operator could vary the pressure the hammer head exerted - some chose to show off their skills by borrowing a watch, placing it under the hammer and halting the hammer head a fraction above the glass face.

The JMC MK1 Bazookoid, it's a serious but of mining equipment... better used for blasting aliens into lots of little pieces. This project has been in my mind for a year and it's been a BLAST to make. This version is specifically the S3:E3 "Polymorph" version, it was difficult to strike the balance between epic sci-fi blaster and shoddy BBC prop but I feel this lands comfortably in the middle. As for workflow it was modelled in blender then baked and textured in Substance Painter, simple! I usually rush through texturing as I get closer to being able to make some sweet renders, so this time I took my time, so I hope the renders are even sweeter. A mention is due for Rob Grant who passed 2 weeks ago, as of this post, for making a very funny show which has left a lasting impression on me, without his equally clever and stupid ideas this project wouldn't exist.
