This model shows the external anatomy of the human heart.  The annotations reflect general features of the heart, with 3D models on coronary vasculature of the heart soon to come.


The model was created from scratch in ZBrush as part of my MSc Medical Art course at the University of Dundee.  It is part of a educational resource project to aid students' learning in the vasculature of the heart, where a 3D printed model has also been created to be used as a comparison for Dundee University's Thiel Cadaver Facility, where the hearts can become quite flat during embalming. 


The project is in collaboration with Mr. Luke Reid, Lecturer in Human Anatomy at the University of Dundee, who confirmed anatomical accuracy of the model. Credit also goes to 3D4medical as my main source of reference and inspiration.

Cardiac Anatomy: Coronary arteries of the heart

This is a 3D animation of a Southern Right Whale (Eubalaena australis, Panel C, Fig. 1) which was reconstructed using the open source software Blender 3D (blender.org). Measurements taken from drone videos of right whales (see Christensen et al. 2019) were used to create an ellipsoid that served as a basis for the model. The measurements for height and width of the whale were taken at increments of 5% of the total body length. Reference photos were also used as a guide to create taxonomic features onto the ellipsoid using Blender 3D sculpting tools (primarily the dynamic topology function). These features included the fluke, pectoral fins, eye, and mouth arrangements.

The Glow Whale is a friendly Leviathan-class Organism that lives in the shallow waters of Sector Zero of 4546B. They are large blue whale-like creatures with very large side fins and a fluked tail. They have many barnacles growing on their skin, and they have 2 blue glowing horns. Their mouth is large and can expand itself to become larger snd swallow up its main source of food, groups of small fish. The glow whale also has bioluminescent spots on its body. They will periodically breach the water surface in a spectacular jump, landing back into the water. They also swim in pods, like earth whales.

Glow Whale

The Incom T-65 X-wing starfighter is a fictional spacecraft from the Star Wars franchise. Named for the distinctive shape made when its wings are in attack position, the X-wing was a class of starfighter used by the Rebel Alliance in their conflict with the Galactic Empire. It made its theatrical debut, as the T-65B model, in Star Wars (1977) as the spacecraft piloted by Luke Skywalker and the Red Squadron when Luke destroyed the Death Star.

Victorian Street Lamp

This is a 3D scan of the holotype fossil specimen of *Calymene blumenbachii*, the "Dudley Bug", one of the best known species of trilobite. This specimen comes from Dudley from the Much Wenlock Limestone Formation, and lived around 428 million years ago, when the Midlands was covered by warm, shallow, tropical seas. Digitised using an Artec Spider 3D scanner by University of Birmingham Palaeobiology & Palaeoenvironments undergraduate student Luke Meade.

This model represents a realistic sperm whale, the largest of the toothed whales and one of the deepest-diving mammals on Earth. The design focuses on accurate anatomy, including its massive square-shaped head, thick body, and powerful tail flukes.

Special attention was given to the whale’s proportions, smooth surface flow, and natural silhouette to reflect its real-world appearance and presence. The goal was to capture both the immense scale and calm, mysterious nature of this deep-sea giant.

This was modelled utlising CT data, imported via Invesalius 3.1, and original sculpting in Pixologic ZBrush. The model was created by Eve Laws for the Centre of Anatomy and Human Indentification and the School of Medicine, at the University of Dundee.
