AI-assisted reconstruction generated from a roadside photograph captured in the American Southwest.

Originally photographed as reference material for collage and design work, the image was used to explore how environmental photography can be transformed into reusable 3D assets. The resulting model captures the distinctive silhouette, weathered materials, and mid-century roadside character of the original sign while allowing it to be viewed and repurposed from any angle.

To improve reconstruction quality, distracting background elements and environmental details were removed before processing. This highlights both the strengths and current limitations of image-to-3D workflows: simple forms reconstruct well, while fine details and complex surroundings can require significant preparation.

Reconstruction – Desert Motel Sign

British army military barracks, Summerhill, Nenagh, Co. Tipperary.  19th-century upgright boundary stone No. 21 with inscription on roadside face W ↑ D (War Department). The broad arrow pointing upwards carved between the W D of which the pheon is a variant, is a stylised representation of a metal arrowhead, comprising a tang & two barbs meeting at a point. It is a symbol used traditionally in heraldry, most notably in England, and later by the British government to mark government property.  The rest of the inscription reads 14 Feet Front in Line From No. 13 No. 14 has a line running through it.  Erected after 1855 when the Board of Ordnance was disbanded & all military land functions were transferred to the newly created War Department. The stone marked the boundary of land belonging to the military barracks. One of at least 21 stones marking the boundary of the military owned land enclosing the barracks. These stones are annotated B.S on 1901 ed. OS 25-inch map. One of four stones facing onto public road.

Nenagh Barracks Boundary Stone No. 21

Stone marked the front boundary of the property belonging to the military barracks. B ↑ O which stands for Board of Ordnance. The broad arrow pointing upwards carved between the B O of which the pheon is a variant, is a stylised representation of a metal arrowhead, comprising a tang and two barbs meeting at a point. It is a symbol used traditionally in heraldry, most notably in England, and later by the British government to mark government property. Erected before 1855 when the Board of Ordnance was disbanded and replaced by the War Department. The stone had an earlier number 6 beneath the No. 5 which has had a line put through it, beneath this there are the letters 8 ft. Front. The Board of Ordnance were the custodian of the lands, depots and forts required for the defence of Britain & Ireland.

One of seventeen scrapbooks compiled by the Reverend William Robert Hay (1761–1839), chairman of the Salford Quarter Sessions and one of the magistrates who ordered the cavalry charge at the Peterloo Massacre of 1819. An ardent anti-reformist, Hay collected thousands of newspaper clippings, broadsides and printed notices relating to radical political movements in Manchester — assembling a record that was as much surveillance as scholarship.
The page visible here preserves two items from 1812, pasted side by side on blue sugar paper. Above, a notice demanding that "Jacobins" swear loyalty to King George III, annotated in Hay's own hand. Below, a Luddite stamp bearing one of the most concise political statements of the period: "No General But Ludd Means the Poor Any Good"
Hay preserved this as evidence of sedition.
