Cupid revives Psyche, relief in marble, after the original model from 1810, Thorvaldsen Museum (Copenhagen, Denmark). Made with Memento beta (now ReMake) from AutoDesk.

With his arrow, Cupid rouses his beloved Psyche. She had succumbed to the temptation to open the jar from the underworld, which turned out to contain a poisonous vapor, rather than a cosmetic.

Three dead souls were judged by the judge in the underworld. The first one was sentenced to the Mountain of Swords for his evil deeds in his previous life. He tried to bribe the judge but failed. The second one practiced Buddhism in his previous life and hoped not to reincarnate, but the judge thought that being reborn as a human was a privilege and ordered him to continue reincarnation. The third one was sentenced to the Pool of Blood for killing someone by refining elixirs, but a celestial general appeared and showed him a summons from heaven, and took him away to become a celestial soldier.

Black Myth: Wukong - Ying Tian Bing [Static]

3D scan of a man that personifies quartz as a powerful mountain spirit rising directly from a cluster of sharp-edged crystal druses. In the tradition of romantic mythical figures such as Rübezahl, the bearded figure appears as an archaic guardian, inextricably linked to the mineral treasures of the underworld. 

The figure was created by Rudolf Weyr (1847-1914) and is part of the decorative program in Hall IV of the Natural History Museum.

NAA of the paste indicates the San Pedro River as the place of origin or manufacture, although stylistically the piece corresponds to the La Corona region.

Plate with Fish of the Underworld

Plate with divergent walls and a flat base, decorated at the center with the image of a stylized deity bearing a shell and a monstrous head, associating the figure with the aquatic underworld. Surrounding the central image are several oval elements related to water, as well as red and black volutes. A decorative band, divided into two sections, encircles the interior wall: one section features black triangles, while the other displays stepped fret motifs and additional abstract elements. The piece was ritually "killed", with a intentional perforation at the center.

Plate with Aquatic Underworld Deity

Codex-style tripod vase, decorated with an underworld scene. The scene shows the image of a spider monkey, in left profile, wearing a piece of cloth over its shoulders formerly known as a "sacrificial scarf" but now associated with the supernatural characters known as wahy [way or waay].  The monkey has a deer's ear and a curled tail. In one of its hands he holds what is known as a "triadic plate" containing a severed hand, a nucleated eye and a femur. On the opposite side of the vase is the image of an ocellated turkey, standing with spread wings and tail.  A series of curved, dotted lines painted above the bird's head seem to indicate that the turkey is in motion, perhaps dancing. The scene is framed by two horizontal red bands.

Codex Vase with Monkey and Turkey

Día de los Muertos is a festival where remembrance becomes celebration. Families build ofrendas with marigolds, candles, and favorite foods to welcome the spirits of loved ones home for a brief reunion. Beneath the festival’s color and music lies an older echo: Mictlantecuhtli, the Aztec lord of the underworld. Depicted as a grinning, fleshless figure, he ruled Mictlán, the final resting place for most souls. Though fearsome, he wasn’t a villain—he embodied the natural cycle of death, a force to be respected rather than avoided. Today, his presence lingers in the festival’s imagery, reminding celebrants that death is not an ending but a companion woven into life’s story.

Mictlantecuhtli - Day of the Dead

Codex style vase with an underworld scene. One side has a jaguar standing, surrounded by star symbols, with its jaws open, its tongue sticking out and wearing a sacrificial or wahy [way or waay] scarf. On the other side, the torso of a character with a black headdress decorated with the upper jaw of a long-lipped monster and long feathers inside of, what appears to be, a structure made of bones. The character is surrounded by nucleated eyes and has round earflares, a necklace of made of eyeballs, a square breastplate, and wristbands made of beads. The right arm is bent over the chest and the left holds a triadic plate with a femur, a severed hand and a nucleated eye.

Incense Burner Featuring a Skeleton

Cylindrical ceramic urn. The central motif is a feline head, probably that of a jaguar, crafted using modeling and appliqué techniques. Its open eyes, with rod-shaped irises, evoke its supernatural nature. Slightly parted jaws reveal prominent teeth and fangs, while rounded ears reinforce its feline identity. In Maya cosmology, the jaguar is closely associated with power, the night, and the underworld. On either side of the head, four vertical columns of conical spikes are arranged, resembling the thorns of a young ceiba trunk. The ceiba (Ceiba pentandra) represents the World Tree, planted at the center of the earth and connecting the three levels of the universe.

Vase with Underworld Figures

This  incense burner features a conical lid with a ceremonial enclosure, within which a richly adorned figure is represented. The figure wears a tall headdress, a trapezoidal nose ornament—possibly a stylized butterfly—and earspools, all elements that emphasize its ritual and symbolic significance. The enclosure is framed by what appear to be “3 mountain glyphs” evoking associations with sacred warfare and sacrifice. The convex surface of the lid is decorated with shells and snails, materials linked to aquatic realms and the underworld in Mesoamerican cosmology.
