The potto (*Perodicticus potto*) is a small (30–40cm) species of primate closely related to lorises and lemurs that inhabits the rainforest canopies of tropical Africa. The potto is nocturnal and feeds mostly on fruit, but has strong jaws that enable it to eat tree gums that are too tough for many other animals; around 10% of its diet consists of insects. 

Whilst moving it is usually very quiet, but has few natural predators as large carnivorous mammals cannot reach the forest canopy, and co-occurring birds of prey hunt during the day. If threatened, the potto can use its specially sharpened and elongated neck vertebrae to butt at an opponent. 

This specimen forms part of the Lapworth’s Humphreys Collection. Digitisation was carried out using an Artec Spider 3D scanner by Rachel Kruft Welton.

Roly Poly

This is the skull of *Platalea* sp., a genus of long-legged wading birds with 6 species found on every continent except Antartica. They feed by sweeping the wide, flat end of their bills partly open through the water to pick up crustaceans or insects. Spoonbills generally stand about 3 feet tall and the only species found in the U.S. is the Roseate Spoonbill which has a pink body and white head.

Spoonbill Skull

A decorative and portable piece of furniture in the form of an angular box closed with a pair of small doors and containing eight drawers. It is covered with tortoise shell which is divided into irregular fields by ribbons of rosewood framed with ivory. The decoration also features an ornament of mother-of-pearl in the form of bunches of fruit, panoplies with eagles, birds catching insects, flowers, horns, acanthus leaves, and heads of knights in helmets. There are brass handles on the side walls, created of intertwined snakes.

Emperor Scorpions (*Pandinus imperator*) are among the largest and most iconic scorpions in the world. Native to West Africa, they can grow up to 8 inches long and are known for their glossy black exoskeleton and powerful pincers. Despite their intimidating appearance, emperor scorpions are relatively docile and use their pincers more than their mild venom to subdue prey.

They thrive in humid environments like tropical forests and burrows, feeding on insects, spiders, and small vertebrates. Their nocturnal habits and sensitivity to vibrations make them stealthy hunters. In captivity, they’re popular among enthusiasts due to their manageable temperament and striking look.

While their sting is comparable to a bee’s, emperor scorpions play a vital ecological role and are studied for their fluorescent properties under UV light. Their blend of size, strength, and gentleness makes them a fascinating ambassador of the Scorpiones order.

**The Brazilian Wandering Spider (*Phoneutria* spp.) is one of the most venomous spiders in the world**, earning its reputation through potent neurotoxic venom and aggressive behavior. Native to tropical South America, especially Brazil, it belongs to the family Ctenidae and includes species like *Phoneutria nigriventer* and *P. fera*.

Unlike web-building spiders, it roams at night in search of prey, using its speed and strength to ambush insects and small vertebrates. Its bite can cause intense pain, muscle spasms, and in rare cases, serious medical complications, though antivenom has greatly reduced fatalities.

The nickname “banana spider” stems from its occasional presence in banana shipments, sparking fear and fascination worldwide. Despite its notoriety, the Brazilian Wandering Spider plays a vital ecological role and studied for its venom’s potential in medical research.

Deathstalker scorpions (*Leiurus quinquestriatus*) are among the most venomous scorpions in the world. Native to arid regions of North Africa and the Middle East, they are instantly recognizable by their pale yellow coloration and slender build. Despite their small size, their venom contains powerful neurotoxins that can cause severe pain, fever, and convulsions in humans, though fatalities are rare with medical care.

These nocturnal hunters use their pincers to grasp prey and their venomous sting to immobilize insects and small animals. Their venom is also studied for potential medical applications, including cancer research and neurological treatments.

Deathstalkers are elusive and fast-moving, often hiding under rocks or in crevices during the day. While their name evokes fear, they play a vital role in desert ecosystems and continue to intrigue scientists and enthusiasts alike.

The European Robin is a species of passerine bird.
The robin feeds in open countryside and woodland. Its diet consists mainly of ground-dwelling invertebrates (insects, especially beetles, snails, worms, and spiders). From autumn to early spring, it also eats a lot of berries and other small fruits. Its hunting technique is well adapted to the mix of dense vegetation and open spaces found in gardens and woodlands. Perched low, the bird observes its surroundings, swoops down, seizes its prey, and perches again. Or it hops about, stopping here and there to search for a victim. In the forest, the robin takes advantage of insects disturbed by pheasants, deer, and wild boar. This may explain why it is so tame and follows the gardener's spade with such interest. We also saw robins following moles digging their tunnels and catching earthworms.

Only female mosquitoes bite, using blood protein to develop eggs, while males feed on nectar. They live worldwide, with over 3,500 species, and are considered one of the deadliest animals to humans.

**game: Carnivores 1 / 2**
The Dimetrodon is a synapsid and an ambient animal in Carnivores 2 and Carnivores: Dinosaur Hunter that wanders around the map eating insects and carrion. They are not a threat and can be killed in one shot from any weapon other than the pistol, which requires two shots to bring down.
In Carnivores: Dinosaur Hunter, the Dimetrodon's skin color was changed for unknown reasons. However, it is thought that it has to do with the visual appeal of the original skin not being up to par. The Dimetrodon had its old skin color restored in a recent update to the game.
Unlike other ambient animals, Dimetrodon needs to be shot twice by a pistol to kill it.

Dimetrodon ("two-measure tooth") is an extinct genus of sphenacodontid pelycosaur synapsids whose species lived in North America and Europe during the Early Permian between 295 and 272 million years ago.

Drosera capensis, the Cape sundew, is a perennial rosette-forming carnivorous herb in the flowering plant family Droseraceae. It is native to the Cape region of South Africa, where it grows in permanently wet, nutrient-poor habitats. Leaves are covered in stalked glands that secrete sticky mucilage. These attract, trap, and digest arthropod prey, obtaining nutrients that supplement intake from the substrate in which the plant grows. The plant is an autotroph that produces its own food in the green leaves by photosynthesis. The nutrients (like minerals N, P, Na, Ca etc)  absorbed from insects are not  plant food but essential miconutrients are used in the production of amino acids, necleotides  which are required for growth.

Drosera commonly known as the sundews comprises one of the largest genera of carnivorous plants. The genus includes annuals and perennials, large and small plants, and denizens of tropical, temperate, and polar habitats.  These plants lure, capture, and digest insects using stalked mucilaginous glands covering their leaf surfaces. The insects are used to supplement the poor mineral nutrition of the soil in which they grow. 
Drosera capensis commonly known as the Cape Sundew is a South African endemic species found exclusively in the Eastern Cape and Western Cape Provinces. Drosera capensis is a free-flowering, robust, carnivorous, evergreen perennial, of varying height, but usually around 15cm. The short, woody stems are rhizomatous below with well-developed roots. From December to January the 15-30, simple, pink-mauve flowers are borne on a single stem and mature in ascending order.

The Gallimimus (misspelled "Galimimus" in the first two games) is a dinosaur and an ambient animal in Carnivores, Carnivores 2, Carnivores: Dinosaur Hunter, Carnivores: Dinosaur Hunter HD, Carnivores: Dinosaur Hunter Reborn, and Carnivores: Dinosaur Hunt
A small and quick ostrich-like dinosaur, Gallimimus uses its fast speed to escape any danger, including the Hunter. This animal is bird-like in appearance. Gallimimus' name means “chicken mimic”, but contrary to its name, it is not a small dinosaur. Gallimimus is actually one of the largest of its group of dinosaurs known as Ornithomimosaurs. Gallimimus uses its long, slender beak to crop plants, capture small animals such as insects and lizards, and eggs by sieving them from muddy environments.

Gallimimus bullatus (Latin for "chicken-like with a clucking sound") is the only known species of the extinct genus Gallimimus, an ornithomimid theropod dinosaur that lived at the end of the Cretaceous period.

This rock is like a fossilised ecosystem! There are many fossils preserved on this sample, the largest of which is a leaf of the Scots Elm, or Bergulme (*Ulmus glabra*),  as well as several insects.

This object is part of the historical ‘Ettingshausen collection’, which is on permanent loan from the Institute of Biology, University of Graz. It is not currently on display.
