Drosera commonly known as the sundews comprises one of the largest genera of carnivorous plants. The genus includes annuals and perennials, large and small plants, and denizens of tropical, temperate, and polar habitats. These plants lure, capture, and digest insects using stalked mucilaginous glands covering their leaf surfaces. The insects are used to supplement the poor mineral nutrition of the soil in which they grow. Drosera capensis commonly known as the Cape Sundew is a South African endemic species found exclusively in the Eastern Cape and Western Cape Provinces. Drosera capensis is a free-flowering, robust, carnivorous, evergreen perennial, of varying height, but usually around 15cm. The short, woody stems are rhizomatous below with well-developed roots. From December to January the 15-30, simple, pink-mauve flowers are borne on a single stem and mature in ascending order.
