Victorian family heirloom jewellery - circa 1895

San Lorenzo Colossal Head 6 is one of the smaller examples of colossal heads, standing 1.67 metres. It measures 1.41 metres wide by 1.26 metres deep and is estimated to weigh between 8 and 10 tons. The head was discovered by a farmworker and was excavated in 1965 by Luis Aveleyra and Román Piña Chan. It is sculpted with a net-like head covering joined together with sculpted beads. A covering descends from under the headdress to cover the back half of the neck. The headband is divided into four strips and begins above the right ear, extending around the entire head. A short strap descends from either side of the head to the ear. The ear ornaments are complex and are larger at the front of the ear than at the back. The face is that of an ageing male with the forehead creased in a frown, wrinkles under the eyes, sagging cheeks and deep creases on either side of the nose.

Mold with the image of a Woman

Effigy vessel with lid in the form of a elderly figure. The vessel corresponds to the waist and lower limbs, and the lid forms the upper part of the body. The figure appears to carry on its back an effigy vessel with a human figure, possibly intended as a container for beverage. Effigy Vessel

Miniature Teotihuacan-style incense. The lid depicts a figure wearing a tall headdress with zoomorphic design, with open eyes and mouth, followed by a band with four floral motifs. Incense Burner

Codex style vase with an underworld scene. One side has a jaguar standing, surrounded by star symbols, with its jaws open, its tongue sticking out and wearing a sacrificial or wahy [way or waay] scarf. A flat, spherical copper bead. This object was made by rolling out a metal wire with a rectangular cross-section. During the Neolithic period, particularly in its later phase, the first tools for working copper were already in use. This period is regarded as the beginning of the Metal Ages and is frequently referred to in academic literature as the Copper Age or Chalcolithic. Copper beads are among the earliest evidence of metal being worked into jewellery.

This object was digitized through the ‘Kulturerbe digital’ program of the Federal Ministry for Arts, Culture, Public Service and Sport.

Copper Bead

Spondylus crassisguama shell, without human intervention (Cotom, 2020). These were highly prized objects and were especially used to collect blood offered in self-sacrifice rituals. They were deposited in hidden offerings (caches), with sacred objects such as jade beads, shark teeth, or stingray spines.  One name that describes this shell is Yohl ik'nal, ""the heart/center of the shell,"" as something divine or precious (according to comments by epigraphers David Stuart and William H. Mex).
