Plomizo Vessel

"Miniature “theater-type” incense burner with decorated lid and pedestal base. The lid, polychrome (black, yellow, white, and red), features a figure wearing a headdress with an owl effigy, decorated with a series of four disks set on a band and feathers at the top. The figure holds two rings decorated with feathers in its hands and wears a trapezoidal nose ornament. The base is hourglass-shaped and decorated with a talud-tablero–like element. NAA of the ceramic paste indicates the Pacific Coast of Guatemala as the place of manufacture (the style corresponds to examples from the Tiquisate and La Gomera area, Escuintla).

Miniature Incense Burner

Effigy vessel with lid in the form of a elderly figure. The vessel corresponds to the waist and lower limbs, and the lid forms the upper part of the body. The figure appears to carry on its back an effigy vessel with a human figure, possibly intended as a container for beverage. The figure’s face shows wrinkles, a slightly open mouth revealing few teeth, and a short beard. The arms are slightly flexed and directed forward, as if holding an object with the hands, which have perforations that may have served this purpose. The figure wears a diadem with what appears to be a fan of feathers; flower-shaped earspools; a necklace of beads and a shell pectoral; and a maxtlatl, whose cloth falls down the front to the feet and is decorated with a trophy head.

Polychrome (orange, red, and black) bowl with a slightly everted neck, globular body, and flat base, featuring relief-modeled facial traits including open eyes, an aquiline nose, a blowing open mouth, and prominent ears functioning as handles, both perforated. The face is decorated with vertical and horizontal red bands on the cheeks and sides of the face, as well as a horizontal row of black dots on each side of the mouth. The back of the vessel is painted with two vertical red lines and two black lines, along with two stepped designs in red outlined in black. NAA of the paste indicates the origin or manufacturing area as western Belize.

Large Effigy Brazier

Cylindrical ceramic urn. The central motif is a feline head, probably that of a jaguar, crafted using modeling and appliqué techniques. Its open eyes, with rod-shaped irises, evoke its supernatural nature. Slightly parted jaws reveal prominent teeth and fangs, while rounded ears reinforce its feline identity. In Maya cosmology, the jaguar is closely associated with power, the night, and the underworld. On either side of the head, four vertical columns of conical spikes are arranged, resembling the thorns of a young ceiba trunk. The ceiba (Ceiba pentandra) represents the World Tree, planted at the center of the earth and connecting the three levels of the universe.
