I wanted to make an atmospheric scene. A tree house deep in the forest and high above the ground. Lost in the forests and cut off from civilization. I hope I managed to at least partly convey the mood of this place.

Tree House

This remarkable golden poison frog (*Phyllobates terribilis*) lives on the ground in humid forests along the Pacific coast of Colombia. They breed by females laying eggs on the ground, in which males transport the larvae to permanent freshwater pools. They are mostly commonly found as mint green and yellow however they can occur as orange. This frog is well known for its densely toxin-coated skin. 

This animal was captured by the Beastcam MACRO from the collection of Michael Wallitis.

Model 39 - Golden Poison Frog

*Strix varia*, or the barred owl, can be commonly found in dense forests and wooded swamps in southwestern Canada, Washington, Oregon and northern California. The barred owl is, on average 48-51 cm tall, and has a rounded-head with grey-white facial disc. Where many owls have ear tufts, the barred owl does not.

The small serrations on an owl’s primary feathers creates small vortices reducing noise from wind drag to near zero. The silent flight of owls inspired the biomimetic solution to wind noise caused by the Shinkansen Bullet Train as it travels near 350km/h. These serrations also inspired the redesign of  Ziehl-Abegg, Inc’s fan blades, reducing noise and improving energy efficiency. This promenade is located in "Koajiro Forest" on the Miura Peninsula in Japan. Koajiro Forest is a valuable park where forests, wetlands and the sea remain untouched.

Boardwalk in the Forest - Point Cloud

This skull belongs to an *Ovis aries*, more commonly known as the domesticated sheep. Domestic sheep can be found worldwide due to their association with humans. They are extremely versatile and are able to live in a variety of habitats ranging from mountain forests to desert biomes. Domestic sheep are believed to be descended from the mouflon (*Ovis gmelini*), a wild sheep native to the Caspian region.

The kangaroo is a marsupial of the order kangaroo, found mainly in mainland Australia and parts of Papua New Guinea. Some of these species are unique to Australia. Different species of kangaroos live in a wide variety of natural environments in Australia, from the cool climates of rainforests and desert plains to the tropics. Kangaroos are the highest and farthest leaping mammals.

In general, Asian elephants are smaller than African elephants and have the highest body point on the head. The tip of their trunk has one finger-like process. Their back is convex or level. Indian elephants reach a shoulder height of between 6.6 and 11.5 ft, weigh between 2,000 to 5,000 kg, and have 19 pairs of ribs. Their skin colour is lighter than that of E. m. maximus with smaller patches of depigmentation, but darker than that of E. m. sumatranus. Females are usually smaller than males and have short or no tusks.

Habitat:
The habitats of Indian elephant are varied, but all are within the tropical region. They can live in grasslands and a variety of forests, including scrub forests, tropical evergreen forests, and deciduous forests. Elephants are herbivores and spend up to 19 hours a day grazing on a variety of plants.

Elephant

3D scan of a Komodo dragon (*Varanus komodoensis*), the largest lizard species in the world. The males grow up to 3 m long and weigh 70 kg. The Komodo dragon lives on the island of Komodo and the surrounding Indonesian islands in savannahs and dry forests.

This specimen is Number 71 of the NHM Top 100 and can be found in Hall 28 of the Natural History Museum Vienna.

Komodo Dragon (NHMW-ZOO-HS-23783)

3D scan of a taxidermized dwarf crocodile (*Osteolaemus tetraspis*). Dwarf crocodiles are the smallest species of crocodiles, reaching a maximum body and tail length of ca. 1.7 meters. *O. tetraspis* is an inhabitant of small rivers and pools of freshwater in forests and swampy regions of Western and Central Africa northern Angola and east of the Congo River. 

This specimen cannot be found in the exhibition of the NHM Vienna. Hall 28 of the NHM Vienna is full of other reptiles and 3D models, some of them are visible in the collection [NHMW 1st Zoological Department](https://skfb.ly/ooFCT).

Dwarf Crocodile (NHMW-ZOO-HS-1974)

This is a taxidermied specimen of a scarlet tanager (*Piranga olivacea*). They are found in mixed deciduous and evergreen forests of eastern North America. Males are a bright red while females tend to be more of an olive yellow.

Tree Dragonfrog

A large, stocky humanoid made of earth and rock, covered in dense moss, lichens, and small mushrooms growing from its shoulders, back, and arms. Thick arms end in rough, root-like hands with gnarled fingers. The head is partially embedded in bark, eyes are subtle dark hollows, mouth barely visible. Legs are massive, feet resemble tree stumps. Butterfly — Stylized Nature Insect

Emperor Scorpions (*Pandinus imperator*) are among the largest and most iconic scorpions in the world. Native to West Africa, they can grow up to 8 inches long and are known for their glossy black exoskeleton and powerful pincers. Despite their intimidating appearance, emperor scorpions are relatively docile and use their pincers more than their mild venom to subdue prey.

They thrive in humid environments like tropical forests and burrows, feeding on insects, spiders, and small vertebrates. Their nocturnal habits and sensitivity to vibrations make them stealthy hunters. In captivity, they’re popular among enthusiasts due to their manageable temperament and striking look.

While their sting is comparable to a bee’s, emperor scorpions play a vital ecological role and are studied for their fluorescent properties under UV light. Their blend of size, strength, and gentleness makes them a fascinating ambassador of the Scorpiones order.
