Granodiorite squatting figure of Roy, High Priest of Amun during the reigns of Ramses II, Merenptah and Sety II, holding a Hathor-headed sistrum before, the dorsal pillar is inscribed with two vertical registers of hieroglyphs - invocations to Amun-Ra and Mut; lower section lost.

The Arc de Triomphe de l'Étoile; lit. 'Triumphal Arch of the Star') is one of the most famous monuments in Paris, France, standing at the western end of the Champs-Élysées at the centre of Place Charles de Gaulle, formerly named Place de l'Étoile—the étoile or "star" of the juncture formed by its twelve radiating avenues. The location of the arc and the plaza is shared between three arrondissements, 16th (south and west), 17th (north), and 8th (east). The Arc de Triomphe honours those who fought and died for France in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, with the names of all French victories and generals inscribed on its inner and outer surfaces. "Assyrian kings ruled the world's largest empire prior to the rise of Persia in the 6th century bc, consolidating lands from Iran to Egypt [...] Masterfully executed with incised details and exaggerated musculature, this giant, fierce, protective spirit raises his right hand in a ritual salute. His left hand grasps a branch bearing rosettes, perhaps a stylized date palm. Across the center of the relief are inscribed lines of Akkadian cuneiform recounting military victories, conquests, plundered loot, and the reconstruction of the city. Destroyed in 612 bc, the palace lay buried for 24 centuries until rediscovered in 1845."

In the build up to D-Day, American servicemen inscribed their names and home towns on a brick wall of the then mortuary building prior to embarkation from Southampton heading to the beaches of Normandy on June 6th 1944.

The project commemorates the 75th anniversary of D-Day through recording of the wall and  its inscriptions using a range of photographic techniques, as well as research into the surviving names to try to identify individuals and find out more about their stories. The ongoing reserach and database is now available through an interactive viewer.

Inscribed on the tortoise's shell: 'OPVS IOANNIS GIBSON ROMAE' Gibson recorded how the wealthy MP Joseph Neeld (1789 1856) had visited his studio in Rome several times before asking him to carve a 'Venus, nude, but with some drapery modestly arranged without sacrificing too much of the form'.

Inspired by Classical prototypes, Gibson showed the Roman goddess of love as an idealised female nude with elegant curves and soft modelling, holding the golden apple, awarded by Paris for her beauty. Although apples are often associated with carnal love, Gibson called his statue Venus Verticordia, or the turner of men's hearts and later recalled how he had

An inscribed oracle bone (jia gu 甲骨) from the Couling-Chalfant collection at the British Library.


Oracle bones were animal bones, usually ox shoulder bones or the underside of turtle shells, used for divination rituals in ancient China. Dating to the Shang dynasty (c. 1600 – 1050 BC), they bear the earliest extant form of Chinese writing and are the oldest items held in the British Library.


The inscription on the reverse of this particular bone records a lunar eclipse, which can be precisely dated to the night of 27 December 1192 BC.

This model was created for a British Library project on oracle bones that formed part of the UK-China Cultural Exchange 2015, supported by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

Miss Elysa Fraser's Mausoleum, 1808, James Byres. The old kirkyard of Cluny in deepest Aberdeenshire hides a breath of Roman classicism designed with great assurance and executed with extraordinary precision. Miss Elyza Fraser's mausoleum, by her friend James Byres, the classical antiquary, of nearby Tonley, is a drum of fine granite ashlar with a moulded base set on a low square podium; it rises to a dome with oculus. The architraved doorpiece is topped by a fine coat of arms between two swags; the frieze is inscribed: ELIZABETH FRASER OF CASTLE FRASER MDCCC VIII. 

Miss Elyza left Byers 'my carriage and best pair of horses' but his plans to be interred in a similar mausoleum were later revoked.

The Mausoleum has recently been completely restored by the North East Scotland Preservation Trust.

Miss Elyza Fraser Mausoleum, Cluny

A limestone lintel, likely from Saqqara, inscribed for the Overseer of Craftsmen Tjenti. The prepared surface of its outer face carries a panel of sunk relief depicting Tjenti, wielding a staff in his left hand and a kerchief in his right, seated on a couch beside his wife, Niankhhathor. Both figures wear wigs, his short and hers long, and long, close-fitting tunics. Before them are two lines of hieroglyphs containing the offering formula. The lintel can be dated to the Fifth Dynasty (c. 2510–2370 BC), with many close examples known from Giza and Saqqara. The main dating criterion is the offering formula.

The artefact is constituted of a solid, circular ring plate with a handshake motif in the centre, which has been sculpted against the background. The background is characterised by a cross-hatching pattern. The hands are set within a raised band inscribed with the German phrase "+ LIEB AN ENDE", which translates to "love forever". This inscription is further embellished with niello technique. The ring plate is distinguished by a smooth ring band with a trapezoidal cross-section. The width of the component at the ring shoulder is slightly greater than at other points, and it abuts the narrow side of the ring plate.

The ring plate is characterised by a pointed oval shape and features a geometric motif with a centrally positioned diamond cross surrounded by heart-shaped volutes and palmettes. The edge area is decorated with diagonal lines, while the ring band exhibits a flat, ribbon-shaped cross-section. The ring band exhibits a slight expansion in the shoulder area, accompanied by a nielloed inscription that is inscribed with the Latin phrase "AVEM[ARI]AG". The ring band is attached to the underside of the ring plate.

Gold-plated silver finger ring

In the churchyard at St Gian's church on the south side is a stone dating from the 5th or 6th century with the inscription ‘ MELI MEDICI FILI MARTINI I(a)CIT’ – ‘Melus, the doctor, son of Martinus. He lies here’. A noticeable feature of this stone is that the inscription is a reference to the dead man’s profession – a doctor, which is a rare occurrence on inscribed stones anywhere in the UK

The three holes at the top were drilled to mount a sundial.
