Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument in Wiltshire, England, two miles (3 km) west of Amesbury. It consists of a ring of standing stones, with each standing stone around 13 feet (4.0 m) high, seven feet (2.1 m) wide and weighing around 25 tons. The stones are set within earthworks in the middle of the most dense complex of Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments in England, including several hundred burial mounds.

One of the most famous landmarks in the United Kingdom, Stonehenge is regarded as a British cultural icon. It has been a legally protected Scheduled Ancient Monument since 1882 when legislation to protect historic monuments was first successfully introduced in Britain. The site and its surroundings were added to UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in 1986. Stonehenge is owned by the Crown and managed by English Heritage; the surrounding land is owned by the National Trust

Cuween Hill Chambered Cairn, near Finstown, Mainland, Orkney, is a late Neolithic (c.3200-2300 BC) 'Maes Howe'-type tomb.  The tomb is located on the side of the hill and the floor is cut into sandstone bedrock.  The chambers are constructed from fine dry-stone walling with corbelled roofs.  The mound measures c.55 feet in diameter and the main chamber is 8 feet 6 inches tall.

The tomb was partly excavated by James Cursiter in 1888 and more extensively investigated by Malcolm M. Charleston in 1901.  The tomb contained at least 8 burials and the skulls of 24 dogs.  The latter may have been a totemic animal, but they were probably deposited in the Bronze Age rather than the Neolithic.  The tomb sites above the Neolithic settlement site of Stonehall, which was excavated by Prof Colin Richards in the 1990s.

Cuween Hill Chambered Tomb, Orkney

A LiDAR landscape of the key archaeological features around Stonehenge including Stonehenge itself, The Avenue, the Cursus and numerous barrow burial mounds. The 1 metre LiDAR is only partial at Stonehenge with many of the sites to the west not included in the current opendata coverage. This is a digital terrain model version which represents the bare ground surface only so prominent buildings, trees and even the stones of the Stonehenge circles are stripped off in this case. 

Created using 1 metre DTM LiDAR opendata provided by the Environment Agency. Built in QGIS using the QGIS2threeJS plugin.

Stonehenge LiDAR Archaeology Landscape

Georeferenced Orthomosaic Map and Model. The most important prehistoric site of the East Midlands, Arbor Low is a Neolithic henge monument atmospherically set amid high moorland. Within an earthen bank and ditch, a circle of some 50 white limestone slabs, all now fallen, surrounds a central stone ‘cove’ – a feature found only in major sacred sites. Nearby is enigmatic Gib Hill, a large burial mound.

Serpent Mound

17th-century recumbent O'Madden graveslab measuring 1.98m long by top Wth 0.76m by base width 0.71m by thickness 0.13m, in the chancel of Portumna Dominican Friary Church (GA127-019----), Co. Galway. Floriated tapering graveslab has Latin cross with fleur-de-lis terminals rising from a stepped base carved in false relief. A central lozenge  frames a six-pointed star/rosette. A triskele is visible in the terminal of the right arm of the cross. Above the cross there is an I H S Christogram with Latin cross rising from the crossbar of the H.  An inscription beneath the base is in Latin. Within the frame around the sides and base of the slab another inscription indicates that this is a memorial slab to the Coghlan and Madden family dating to 1648.  Hic est Tumulus Corneil coglin et unctae maddin uxor seiuset successorum pro quibus orate pro april 1648 - This is the Mound of Cornelius Coghlan and ?? The monument is a round cairn, a burial monument likely to date to the Bronze Age (second millennium BC). It is visible as a substantial mound of bare stones, measuring approximately 30m in diameter and standing at least 4.5m high. Stones abutting the base of the cairn give the appearance of a platform. The monument is situated on a prominent ridge at a height of 170m OD, on a S-facing slope overlooking the Water of Feugh.

> Fragment of a mold-made terracotta female figurine with a lion-like head (2878 / TZ 015312-001), dating to the Late Bronze Age–Iron Age. It depicts the upper body of a fertility goddess with a large centrally parted hairstyle falling over the shoulders, one visible ear, and exposed breasts. The lower part is broken off and facial details are eroded, but the fragment is otherwise stable.

**Methodology:** Scanned by GDH in July 2025 using Canon R5. Processed in RealityCapture.

# Description:
> Yoke finial (4174 / TZ 010950-001) made of alabaster, dating to Iron Age II. It is a fragment of a round pommel with a smoothly polished top surface and a centric drill hole, round in cross-section, with a deep circular groove in the middle. The top side has a central round hole, while the bottom side features a rectangular hole. The object belongs to chariot equipment and measures 3.7 cm in height with a maximum diameter of 2.5 cm.
