Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument in Wiltshire, England, two miles (3 km) west of Amesbury. It consists of a ring of standing stones, with each standing stone around 13 feet (4.0 m) high, seven feet (2.1 m) wide and weighing around 25 tons. The stones are set within earthworks in the middle of the most dense complex of Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments in England, including several hundred burial mounds.

One of the most famous landmarks in the United Kingdom, Stonehenge is regarded as a British cultural icon. It has been a legally protected Scheduled Ancient Monument since 1882 when legislation to protect historic monuments was first successfully introduced in Britain. The site and its surroundings were added to UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in 1986. Stonehenge is owned by the Crown and managed by English Heritage; the surrounding land is owned by the National Trust

A LiDAR landscape of the key archaeological features around Stonehenge including Stonehenge itself, The Avenue, the Cursus and numerous barrow burial mounds. The 1 metre LiDAR is only partial at Stonehenge with many of the sites to the west not included in the current opendata coverage. This is a digital terrain model version which represents the bare ground surface only so prominent buildings, trees and even the stones of the Stonehenge circles are stripped off in this case. 

Created using 1 metre DTM LiDAR opendata provided by the Environment Agency. Built in QGIS using the QGIS2threeJS plugin.

Stonehenge LiDAR Archaeology Landscape

The oaks (Quercus) are a genus of plants in the beech family (Fagaceae). In ancient religions, myths and legends, the oak was a sacred tree. All parts of the oak are slightly poisonous because of the tannins they contain. The fruits (acorns) are rich in carbohydrates and proteins and were used for fattening pigs.

Georeferenced Orthomosaic Map and Model. The most important prehistoric site of the East Midlands, Arbor Low is a Neolithic henge monument atmospherically set amid high moorland. Within an earthen bank and ditch, a circle of some 50 white limestone slabs, all now fallen, surrounds a central stone ‘cove’ – a feature found only in major sacred sites. Nearby is enigmatic Gib Hill, a large burial mound.

Near Marlborough, Wiltshire, a 2020 study showed the best element match for the sarsen stones of Stonehenge. In the middle of the park there is a hairpin with an oval ring of stones. This is the first one I scanned, which contained a couple of surprises.

West Woods 1

The fourth in a collection of sarsen stones found in West Woods, near Marlborough and Pewsey. The sarsens of Stonehenge are evidenced to have been sourced here.

West Woods 4

The Priddy Circles are probably Neolithic ritual or ceremonial monuments similar to a henge but this interpretation is somewhat speculative due to the presence of external rather than internal ditches.

Priddy Circles & Barrows, Somerset, UK

One of a large set of stones in West Woods, near Marlborough, reputed site of the Stonehenge sarsens. Some show tool marks and have apparent flint artefacts on them or nearby.

The third in a loose oval of approx 25 stones in West Woods, near Marlborough. These were confirmed by chemical analysis to be the source of sarsen stones at Stonehenge.

Another moss-covered stone in West Woods, near Marlborough. Scientific analysis revealed this site to be the likely source of the sarsen stones at Stonehenge.

West Woods 6

This is a reconstruction in plaster of the face of a Neolithic woman made by Caroline Wilkinson of the University of Manchester. This Neolithic woman must have been very special to her community because she was buried in the ring ditch of a henge near to the entrance. To add to the mystery, she was also buried with two wolves or extremely large dogs. The skeleton suggests she was 30 to 40 years old when she died, so an old lady 5,000 years ago. Also found at the henge was a processional way leading to the River Ash, a boiling pit for cooking, animal bones and antler pick tools for digging. Add to that the entrance to the henge is aligned to sunrise on midsummers day and we have a very special lady buried in a very special place, Staines Road Farm in Shepperton. Sadly, the site has long been lost to gravel working.

Visible edge of a stone in West Woods near Marlborough, which is the source of the Stonehenge sarsens. Unassuming except it has two worked holes, each drilled at 90 degrees and meeting in the middle.
