This approximately 4.5-meter marble statue was part of Pope Clement XI's commission for twelve colossal apostle figures to fill the niches designed by Francesco Borromini. Rusconi was among the leading sculptors involved in this project. The statue presents a solemn and pious depiction of the apostle, characterized by his attribute of the X-shaped cross, symbolizing his martyrdom. The work blends Baroque drama with classical restraint, reflecting the artistic standards of early 18th-century Roman sculpture.
