This approximately 4.5-meter marble statue was part of Pope Clement XI's commission for twelve colossal apostle figures to fill the niches designed by Francesco Borromini. Rusconi was a central sculptor in this project. The statue presents a solemn depiction of the former tax collector and Evangelist, often characterized by holding a book or money bag. It masterfully blends Baroque dynamism with classical equilibrium, making it a exemplary work within the series.
