This is a 3D animation of a Southern Right Whale (Eubalaena australis, Panel C, Fig. 1) which was reconstructed using the open source software Blender 3D (blender.org). Measurements taken from drone videos of right whales (see Christensen et al. 2019) were used to create an ellipsoid that served as a basis for the model. The measurements for height and width of the whale were taken at increments of 5% of the total body length. Reference photos were also used as a guide to create taxonomic features onto the ellipsoid using Blender 3D sculpting tools (primarily the dynamic topology function). These features included the fluke, pectoral fins, eye, and mouth arrangements.

This is an animation of a juvenile (straight minimum carapace length = 27.5 cm, mass = 3.0 kg) green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) that was reconstructed from photos and measurements from a live individual. The turtle was collected by Inwater Research Group during an in-water assessment to gain valuable insights into the demographics of this threatened species.  The turtle was in good health and released back into the wild.  A CG artist (Johnson Martin) reconstructed the turtle using Blender software.

Model 72B - Juvenile Green Sea Turtle

This is an animation of a juvenile (straight minimum carapace length = 75.1 mm, mass = 72.8 g, age=20 days) Leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) that was reconstructed from photos and measurements from a live individual. The turtle was collected by Jeanette Wyneken (Florida Atlantic University) for her research on leatherback ecology and development, and the model was created in collaboration with the Upwell Non-Profit (https://www.upwell.org/).  CG artist Johnson Martin reconstructed the turtle using Blender software.

The 3D model presents a historical mannequin (a dress form) dating to 1900s. The virtual mannequin was generated automatically by using a new method of parametric modelling (for further details see https://doi.org/10.1108/IJCST-06-2019-0093). The values of body measurements were taken from a sizing table. The measurements are: bust – 81.4 cm; waist – 51.4 cm; hip – 92.4 cm. I have had to use a lot of artisit licence with this model as high quality photographs are hard to come by.  I do not use schematic diagrams for my models and only use photographs I can find on google images.  With some basic measurements found on wikipedia, I am ususally able to get a close approximation.

In this 3D solar system size comparison model, the radius of each planet is measured relative to Earth's radius (6,378 km). This means that the Earth's sphere in the model has a radius of 1 cm, where 1 cm represents 6,378 km. For example, the sphere representing Jupiter has a radius of 10.961 cm, and its actual radius can be calculated using the formula:

Sphere Radius* 6,378 = Actual Radius of the Planet

The data used in this model was sourced from Google. While the model provides a useful size comparison, it is not 100% accurate because planets have different radii at the poles and the equator. However, it still serves as a good reference for understanding relative sizes.

The Sun’s radius can also be calculated using the same formula. However, the Sun does not have a single, fixed radius, as different wavelengths of light reveal slightly different measurements. In this 3D model, the Sun’s radius was determined based on visible light observations.

L/A Meriluoto is one of two ferries operating between Oulunsalo and Hailuoto in the northwestern Finland. She has been operating on the route for 30 years, starting from 1996 and ending in 2026 when the Hailuoto causeway will replace ferry traffic.

Measurements: length: 53.5 m, breadth: 12.3 m, draught: 4.2 m, capacity: approx. 45 cars.

I went with the detailing and color scheme of the ferry in the mid-2010s, since I think the current appearance isn't as visually interesting. Model based on photomatching, not blueprints. Modeling done in Sketchup and then moved into Blender at the last minute, so have fun cleaning up the probably incredible topology and whatnot. Sorry :)

Hailuoto car ferry L/A Meriluoto

Each drawer has a position constraint so that it doesn't open more than how it does in real life.

Made in Blender 5.0 and exported as an .FBX because I get an Error 13 with the .blend file.<br>

IKEA ALEX Drawer 23x14x27

Hailuoto car ferry L/A Merisilta

This model was obtained by applying advanced photogrammetry technologies and cutting edge techniques currently not applied to this field that have allowed me to recreate previously unattainable models like Harbin, Yunxian 2 and now HLD-6. This model represents a reconstruction of the HLD-6 cranium from the Hualongdong paleoanthropological site in Dongzhi County, Anhui Province, China.

The HLD-6 individual lived during the late Middle Pleistocene, approximately 300,000 years ago. Stratigraphic and geochronological studies place the Hualongdong hominin assemblage between roughly 331–275 thousand years ago.

This digital reconstruction was created using published anatomical descriptions and visual references from the study “Craniofacial reconstruction and morphological analysis of the HLD-6 skull” (Acta Anthropologica Sinica, 2025) and scaled using cranial measurements from the supplementary dataset of “The phylogenetic position of the Yunxian cranium elucidates the origin of Homo longi and the Denisovans.”

This model features detailed fabric folds and high quality materials making it suitable for use in games animation and rendering. The creation process in Blender involved first taking measurements from the mannequin. For the skirt I started with a plane used the Knife Project tool to cut it then connected the vertices. After that I ran a simulation in Blender to fit the plane onto the mannequin s body forming the skirt. Then I created the top and merged both pieces together.
