This is a 3D animation of a Southern Right Whale (Eubalaena australis, Panel C, Fig. 1) which was reconstructed using the open source software Blender 3D (blender.org). Measurements taken from drone videos of right whales (see Christensen et al. 2019) were used to create an ellipsoid that served as a basis for the model. The measurements for height and width of the whale were taken at increments of 5% of the total body length. Reference photos were also used as a guide to create taxonomic features onto the ellipsoid using Blender 3D sculpting tools (primarily the dynamic topology function). These features included the fluke, pectoral fins, eye, and mouth arrangements.

The Scarab Pectoral was found in Tutankhamun's tomb along with hundreds of other pieces of jewellery. He probably wore it during his lifetime, hung from a gold chain around his neck. It shows a scarab beetle with a sun on top and a bowl on the bottom, and a pair of bird's wings.

Ancient Egyptian Jewelry

Anthropomorphic whistle in the shape of a standing Maya warrior. The posture suggests a firm stance of authority or readiness for combat. He wears a loincloth with a decorated belt and an elaborate turban composed of elements evoking textiles, crowned by a feline mask or face at the top. The arms and shoulders are adorned with ribbons and ropes. Across the chest, he wears a necklace with plaques, followed by another necklace made of large rings from which a trophy head appears to hang. The head is suspended upside down, resembling a ceremonial pectoral, and from it hang four long fringed ribbons that may artistically represent the victim’s hair. The hollow structure of the piece and the blowing mouthpiece located on the back indicate its sound-producing function.

Anthropomorphic Pectoral

Effigy vessel with lid in the form of a elderly figure. The vessel corresponds to the waist and lower limbs, and the lid forms the upper part of the body. The figure appears to carry on its back an effigy vessel with a human figure, possibly intended as a container for beverage. Pectoral in the form a Crocodile or Lizard

Anthropomorphic mosaic mask with jade pieces for the face; Spondylus princeps shell and coral for the lips; and eyes inlaid with shell and obsidian. Its size suggests it may have been a royal belt ornament or a pectoral. The Maya were masters in the creation and manufacture of masks from various materials, especially jade.
