The ancient city, covering an area greater than 16 sq km (6.2 sq mi), is the largest known ancient Maya city-complex dating to the Classic period. It is estimated to have had a peak population of 100,000 to 200,000 with an urban density of 600 to 700 people per square kilometer. During the Classic Maya period from 200 to 850 CE, Tikal flourished, becoming the preeminent political, economic, and military power in the region. At least 33 rulers oversaw the construction of numerous monuments, many of which remain to be uncovered.

Spouted vessel

Teotihuacan style incense burner  from the Pacific Coast of Guatemala. It features a bell-shaped lid with lateral handles, decorated with a human face framed within a circular medallion. It supports a reliquary figure (also called “guest” or “host”), representing an elderly man wearing a rounded headdress and skirt, with large Spondylus ear ornaments. The figure holds a severed trophy head, and on the chest a small opening with removable cover reveals the face of another individual wearing a decorated headdress. The base, is biconical and decorated with triangles forming a bow-tie motif.

Globular Zoomorphic Effigy Vessel (Canine)

Urn or incense burner lid in Teotihuacan style with an anthropomorphic handle. The lid is truncated-conical in shape, and surmounted by a male figure blowing what appears to be the base of a blowgun, which he holds with both hands. The right leg is bent beneath the left, which hangs forward. He wears a cap or helmet, round earspools, and a loincloth. Traces of red pigment are present. This style is frequently found in the Tiquisate or La Gomera area, Escuintla, and at other sites along the  Pacific Coast of Guatemala.
