Located in Strade Dominican friary (MA070-067001-), one of a group of five floriated graveslabs standing upright attached to the internal face of the south wall of the friary chancel. Tapered graveslab with floriated cross measuring 1.19m long by 0.39m wide that served as the lid of a medieval stone coffin/sarcophagus.  The surface of the slab is worn, but the outline of a long cross fleury carved in low relief extending almost the full length of the slab is visible.   Greek crosses rise from the terminals of the diagonal arms which represent the Crucifix and may represent a version of the Lily Crucifix.  Wavy diagional line near cross base has flowering terminals topped with a Greek cross.  Carving is best viewed in Matcap render. Flowering cross based on the Tree of Life.  In Christian theology, the crucifixion of Jesus transforms the cross from a "tree of death" into a new "Tree of Life," reversing the fall of humanity in Eden. Strade Abbey Graveslab MA070-067009-

Drosera capensis, the Cape sundew, is a perennial rosette-forming carnivorous herb in the flowering plant family Droseraceae. It is native to the Cape region of South Africa, where it grows in permanently wet, nutrient-poor habitats. Leaves are covered in stalked glands that secrete sticky mucilage. These attract, trap, and digest arthropod prey, obtaining nutrients that supplement intake from the substrate in which the plant grows. The plant is an autotroph that produces its own food in the green leaves by photosynthesis. The nutrients (like minerals N, P, Na, Ca etc)  absorbed from insects are not  plant food but essential miconutrients are used in the production of amino acids, necleotides  which are required for growth.

Strade Dominican Friary is a National Monument in state ownership (No. 172). The abbey dates to the mid-13th century, when it first started as a Franciscan Friary, established by the Lord of Athlethan (Ballylahan), Jordan de Exeter. The Dominican friars moved into Strade in 1253. The priory was dedicated to the Holy Cross & was a daughter house of Sligo Dominican priory (SL014-068008-). One of a group of 5 graveslabs on display against the south wall of the chancel of the Dominican friary church. This tapered slab served as the lid of a stone coffin. It bears a floriated cross in low relief, the terminals of the cross appear to form trefoils/bud & leaf or flower & leaf motif, a fleur-de-lis/flower of the lily. Strade Abbey Graveslab MA070-067007-

Drosera commonly known as the sundews comprises one of the largest genera of carnivorous plants. The genus includes annuals and perennials, large and small plants, and denizens of tropical, temperate, and polar habitats.  These plants lure, capture, and digest insects using stalked mucilaginous glands covering their leaf surfaces. The insects are used to supplement the poor mineral nutrition of the soil in which they grow. 
Drosera capensis commonly known as the Cape Sundew is a South African endemic species found exclusively in the Eastern Cape and Western Cape Provinces. Drosera capensis is a free-flowering, robust, carnivorous, evergreen perennial, of varying height, but usually around 15cm. The short, woody stems are rhizomatous below with well-developed roots. From December to January the 15-30, simple, pink-mauve flowers are borne on a single stem and mature in ascending order.

One of five floriated tapered graveslabs set upright against the internal face of the south wall of the chancel of Strade Dominican Friary (MA070-067001-), Co. Mayo. Broken tapered cross-slab grave-cover which served as the lid of a stone coffin/sarcophagus.  Only the lower half of a cross-fleury carved in low relief with raised border running along edge of the stone.  The base of the cross has a fleur-de-lis or lily flower terminal consisting of acentral teardrop shaped projection flanked on either side by curling leaves. Vertical line in central teardrop may represent the stamen of the flower head.  Vertical groove running along centre of cross-shaft.  Floriated cross possibly symbolising the flowering lily known in French as the Fleur-de-Lys/Flower of the Lily.  The lily, is a  symbol of the Virgin Mary often appearing in art representing the Annunciation.  Associated with Resurrection & Easter & the triumph of Christ over death. Strade Abbey Graveslab MA070-067008-

This rock features multiple plant fragments, including a bog myrtle leaf (*Myrica lignitum*) on one side and abundant conifer shoots on the other. It comes from the Eibiswalder Schichten, a rock formation that formed 14–18 million years ago during the early Miocene Epoch. 

This object is part of the historical ‘Ettingshausen collection’, which is on permanent loan from the Institute of Biology, University of Graz. It is not currently on display.

Strade Abbey Graveslab MA070-067010-

19th-century round-topped shouldered headstone of Connor O'Shaughnessy (born c. 1759) who died aged 66 in 1825  & was buried in Nenagh graveyard, Kenyon Street, Co. Tipperary.  Memorial stone erected by his wife Bridget O'Shaughnessy.  Headstone also marks the grave of her son James O'Shaugnessy (born c. 1784) who died in 1811 aged 27. Inscription framed by a border of lozenges.  Above the inscription the headstone is decorated with two flowering plants either side of a four armed diamond-shaped cross, the panels of which are infilled with chequerboard pattern.  Flowering plants flanked on either side by a ciborium or communion cup.  Above this there is an I H S Christogram with Latin Cross rising from the crossbar of the H within a sunburst and Latin Motto Gloria In Excelsis Deo.

Connor O'Shaughnessy Headstone Kenyon Street

19th-century round-topped shouldered headstone of Margaret Ryan  (born c. 1787) who died aged 16 in 1803 & was buried in Nenagh graveyard, Kenyon Street, Co. Tipperary.  Inscription framed by a border of lozenges. Above the inscription the headstone is decorated with two flowering plants flanked on either side by a ciborium or communion cup topped with a cross and orb. Above this there is an I H S Christogram with Latin Cross rising from the crossbar of the H within a sunburst and Latin Motto Gloria In Excelsis Deo.
