Skull and neck of an adult green iguana (_Iguana iguana_, OUVC 10677), with annotations of some of the more obscure anatomical features. It was collected legally and euthanized humanely by Zoo Miami staff and provided to us for research and education. We scanned the head region on the OUµCT scanner in 2012 at a resolution of 90µm (0.090 mm). Scan data were imported into workstations running Avizo and digitally extracted the bones and soft tissues. The work on this project was done primarily by Alexandra Spaw, who at the time was an undergraduate student in Ohio University's Honors Tutorial College and now is a medical student at Ohio State University. A small scene with a little story about the workstation of a graffiti artist who started experimenting with alchemy.

The Graffiti Alchemist

Skull of a young alligator (Alligator mississippiensis, OUVC 10389) with annotations of some of the blood vessels. It was legally provided to us by the Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge for research and education. We scanned the head region on the OUµCT scanner at a resolution of 90µm (0.090 mm). Scan data were imported into workstations running Avizo and digitally extracted the bones and soft tissues. This specimen was used by David Dufeau during his dissertation research and then was used by Ruger Porter during his dissertation research on dinosaur blood vessels and their role in thermal physiology. This specimen was part of the sample included in the PLOS ONE article by Dufeau and Witmer (http://bit.ly/2dWhTNZ) and a Journal of Anatomy article by Porter, Sedlmayr, & Witmer (http://bit.ly/2e0WqVg). The original CT scan data can be downloaded on Dryad (http://bit.ly/2ebdnZS), along with a 3D PDF that provides comparable content to what’s here but allows more control. The model can be downloaded  here as an FBX.

## Scanning
The motorcycle was scanned in IR-mode on the Rigil using 1.5mm resolution and feature tracking without connection to a PC. The picture of the bike misleads about the lighting conditions (modern smartphone witchery be thanked): the place was too dim for texture tracking and in these cases better results can be achieved by only using feature tracking. For scanning itself I didn't do any preparations like scan spray and focused on the both sides by using the saddle as the connection for switching sides.  
While scanning the Rigil held a constant 20 FPS (if texture tracking would be also enabled for hybrid tracking FPS will be lower). Scanning itself took roughly 5min.

## Post-Processing
Post processing was done on my workstation and included generation of the point cloud and subsequent meshing in recommended settings. Since it came out to 15M triangles I reduced it to 4M so the scan could be uploaded to Sketchfab.

Porsche 911 GT3 - Satin Black

The Aston Martin Vulcan: Soft Lavender Edition is a high-performance paradox—a brutal, track-bred monster reimagined through the lens of High-Tech Minimalism. ## Scanning
The motorcycle was scanned in markerless alser mode on the Rigil using 1mm resolution and feature tracking without connection to a PC. For scanning itself I didn't do any preparations like scan spray and focused on the both sides with one scan per side whilst ensuring enough overlap for easy alignment in later steps.  
While scanning the Rigil held roughly 20 FPS. Scanning itself took roughly 5 to 10min per side, so a a bit longer than in IR mode (was using 1.5mm there though). 

## Post-Processing
Post processing was done on my workstation and included generation of the point clouds, automatic feature alignment and subsequent meshing in recommended settings. Quicksurface was used for alignment to the coordinate system and reduction of the point cloud size. Since it came out quite large I reduced it to 4M so the scan could be uploaded to Sketchfab.

BMW Motorcycle - Einscan Rigil Markerless Laser

## Scanning
The scans were captured with wireless connection to my workstation to capture the data faster (~80FPS over WiFi).  
For the laser scan marker tracking was used. The scan bench was placed on a turntable with marker geometries placed around it to allow scanning from shallower angles (as seen in last picture). The resolution was set to 0.1mm and exposure was adjusted so the white print wasn't overexposed. For laser mode I used a combination of cross, parallel and single line mode, changing them can be done by double pressing the scan start button on the scanner.   

## Post-Processing
For both scans processing was done using the recommended settings within CrealityScan. This is basically only Fusion since it already generates a mesh at this step which can directly be exported.  
After exporting the meshes I used Quicksurface to align the meshes to the coordinate system and each other.

## Scanning
Scan was done in IR mode with 3mm resolution and large mode, Rigil was used standalone. For tracking only feature tracking was used (texture would have helped but the light was dim and flickery (fluorescent tubes be thanked) so no real help...). This created a bit of a challenge when scanning the tar large flat parts of the couch. The persian carpet would have provided enough texture but it couldn't be used for tracking due flickering of the light tubes. Scan itself took roughly 5min.

## Post-Processing
Just point cloud generation and meshing at recommended settings (meshing as semi-watertight) on my workstation (simply faster than on device). After meshing I did a quick texture optimization and alignment within Exscan Rigil.

Seating Area (Upholstery) - Einscan Rigil

## Scanning
Scan was done in IR mode with 1mm resolution and large mode. For tracking only feature tracking was used (texture would have helped but the light was dim and flickery so no real help...). The final result consists of two scans (top and bottom) to capture the whole armchair. Between the scans I had to turn the chair around so I made sure to capture all cushiony parts in the top scan so when they are deformed after turning I already captured them. When having relatively smooth textile without much wrinkles for tracking you can always try

## Post-Processing
Just point cloud generation and meshing at recommended settings (meshing as semi-watertight) on my workstation (simply faster than on device). Alignment was done in Quicksurface as well as reduction or triangle count (from 14M to ~3M).

Scan Bench - Creality Sermoon P1 IR Normal

## Scanning
The scan was created in IR-mode with automatic exposure and geometry tracking. I created two scans: one of the whole tombstone in large scan mode and one detailed one of the head in normal scan mode. I started from the front and slowly moved around the part while keeping an eye on having enough overlap for tracking (rotating the scanner to reach in to the crevices works quite well to circumvent obstructions due to limited line of sight). While scanning the framerate was roughly 10 FPS with some highs to 15 and lows to 6 FPS (NIR mode still needs an update I guess, currently no marker scanning supported).

## Post-Processing
For post processing I first transferred the scan data from the P1 to my workstation. I then fused the whole tombstone scan at 1mm and the high detail at 0.5mm. Fusion already creates a mesh so no need to mesh a second time (only needed when merging multiple scans or when you need texture mapping). For alignment and cleanup of the base I used Quicksurface.
