**Kruseler Made in Nürnberg**

Ihren Namen haben die Kruseler Puppen von einer speziellen Damen-Haube. Diese wurde mit Rüschen aus mehreren Lagen aufwendig hergestellt und um 1400 in der Oberschicht getragen.

Die modisch gekleideten Püppchen gelten als erstes nachweisbares und in Serie gefertigtes Spielzeug im Mittelalter. Den Funden nach lag eines der größten europäischen Herstellungszentren in Nürnberg. Dass die Kruseler-Figuren im 14. Jahrhundert auftauchen, scheint kein Zufall zu sein. Produktneuheiten und technische Innovationen, wie die Verwendung von Modeln im Töpferhandwerk, kennzeichneten die Zeit vom 12. bis 15. Jahrhundert.

The Iron Key is possessed of a lozenge-shaped bow, distinguished by a volute-shaped decoration in its upper corner. The bit is accompanied by a front cut and four clefts, one of which is broken and no longer present.

The Borrchs frame is circular in shape and features a flat rectangular cross-section. The motif depicted is that of a vine, accompanied by a border that is presumed to contain niello. The frame is intricately carved on both sides, serving as a shaft for the pin.

A gold-plated silver ring with a slightly oval ring plate. In the center of the ring plate is an ornamented heraldic lily, which is framed by stamens. An illegible inscription (“+ ∙ VONC ∙ MSAO ∙ V”) surrounds the lily. The ring band is characterized by a round oval cross-section, which is flattened and widened in the area of the ring shoulder. Two cross lines and three rows of stepped lines are also characteristic features. The band transitions clearly into the ring plate.

The shield-shaped ring plate features a recessed central field decorated with a left-facing rooster's head above a six-pointed flower. This is surrounded by a raised frame bearing an inscription and a border. The ring band is flat and D-shaped in cross-section, and is attached to the ring plate via cross profiling.
An inscription has been identified on the edges of the ring plate which could be described as a 'love inscription'. LIB / ANE / NDE.

Gold-plated silver ring with a round ring plate. The central motif is characterised by the depiction of a bird advancing to the left, accompanied by a star positioned on the right. The motif is framed by a border line and a pseudo-inscription reading "VIVIVIVI". The ring band exhibits a flat rectangular cross-section, which is wider and clearly offset towards the ring plate. The ring shoulder is characterised by the presence of two rows of short lines, separated from the band by a cross line.

A gold-plated silver ring with a round ring plate. The central motif features the depiction of a bird advancing to the right, accompanied by a star positioned on the left and a crescent moon situated on the right. The motif is circumscribed by a bordering line and the inscription "MVAICITLOA." The inscription appears to be an indissoluble abbreviation of a series of words. The ring band exhibits a solid structure, characterised by a semicircular cross-section, which seamlessly integrates with the ring plate. Two longitudinal bundles of lines are observable on the ring shoulder.

The ring band exhibits a robust appearance and a flat rectangular cross-section. The handshake motif is clearly defined and sculpted. The inscription 'LIEBHER' is clearly legible on the ring band. The precise nature of the text's referent remains ambiguous, as it cannot be determined with certainty whether the name 'Liebher' or the distinctly written salutation 'Lieber Herr' (Dear Sir) is intended. The letters are embedded in a smooth background with cross-hatching, and there is a diagonally hatched rectangular field in the area of the ring shoulder.

The shield-shaped ring plate is crossed in the middle by a shield-shaped field that rotates from the axis of the ring plate. The field is embellished with a heraldic lion and circumscribed by an inscription that is presumed to read 'O-I-V'. The solid ring band has a semicircular, faceted profile cross-section and is slightly wider towards the ring shoulder. It is decorated with two solid, highly detailed animal heads, which end in offset, longitudinally engraved rods on the narrow side of the ring plate.

**Dating:** 1240 - 1400 CE 

The artefact is constituted of a solid, circular ring plate with a handshake motif in the centre, which has been sculpted against the background. The background is characterised by a cross-hatching pattern. The hands are set within a raised band inscribed with the German phrase "+ LIEB AN ENDE", which translates to "love forever". This inscription is further embellished with niello technique. The ring plate is distinguished by a smooth ring band with a trapezoidal cross-section. The width of the component at the ring shoulder is slightly greater than at other points, and it abuts the narrow side of the ring plate.

The frame consists of two intertwined quadrangles accentuated by fleur-de-lis-shaped elements. The frame is also decorated with a bead molding. There is a recess on the inner edge of the frame for the pin axle. 
Brooches were an essential part of high and late medieval fashion and fulfilled two significant functions. The smaller versions were used to close the neckline of the undergarment or dress, while the larger, more sturdy clasps were used to fasten the cloak either on the shoulder or at the front of the chest.
